Establishing customer trust and identity are critical for successful financial inclusion in the Philippines. This was highlighted by Pavel Schamberger, Skyro’s head of Data and Business Development during the recently concluded Manila Tech Summit 2025 at the Shangri-La The Fort.
Now on its fifth run, this year’s Manila Tech Summit, dubbed “Forging a New Global Order: Risks and Opportunities Redefined”, raised urgent and relevant issues that are shaping the world today while exploring solutions, strategic investments, and forward-thinking strategies to thrive and survive in the dynamic and ever-changing world of fintech.
“One of the key challenges in lending is establishing trust and identity. The fragmented ecosystem of national and local IDs complicates the verification process. In addition, many individuals remain largely part of the offline, cash-based economy, with little to no digital footprint, making their onboarding particularly difficult,” he explained during the summit’s panel discussion that centered on the topic, The Rise of AI-Powered Finance in Asia: Use Cases from Lending to Risk Scoring.
Over 92 million Filipinos have already registered for the National ID, but around 36 million are still waiting for their physical cards, while millions more lack even the most basic identification. Although Skyro accepts other valid IDs, the fragmented system still creates challenges for fast and secure onboarding. This makes identity verification not just a step in compliance, but the foundation of customer trust and the gateway that allows more Filipinos to access loans quickly, securely, and fairly.
However, he also noted that the country has been making significant development over the years, “ The country has seen tremendous progress, with major data sources now readily available.” He hopes this will continue to improve to further accelerate digital financial ecosystem in country.
Meanwhile, over hundreds of participants flocked to the interactive Skyro booth where they enjoyed exciting activities such as the Skyro-pardy – a fast-paced quiz showdown inspired by Jeopardy where participants were asked questions from fintech facts to all-things Skyro.
For over five years, the Manila Tech Summit has become a pivotal platform for collaboration among hundreds of digital finance organizations to ensure that the Philippines’ fintech innovation can be on par with the global fintech space. Skyro’s participation only serves to strengthen Manila Tech Summit’s mission to place the Philippines as a key player in the global fintech ecosystem.
